How Sue Sees It

Kurt: It's my dad. He's the most important thing in the world to me. I love him...and I'm afraid that I might be losing him because of my... sexuality.

Sue: Your sexuality? How old are you, sixteen? Have you even kissed a boy?

Kurt: No.

Sue: Have you ever kissed a girl?

Kurt: No.

Sue: Well, then how could you possibly know what you like? You see that's the problem with your generation. You're obssessed with labels. So you like Showtunes, doesn't mean you're gay! It just means you're awful. You know there's only one person in this world you can tell you what you are...

Kurt: Me.

Sue: No, me, Sue Sylvester. And she hasn't quite made her mind about you.

...and this is how Sue sees it.

Glee "Mysteries": Mike, Quinn and Mercedes

A lot has been said about  Glee's writing in Season 2--its quality, the lack of consistency and the lack of character development of non-major characters. But in Season 3, the writers tried to go back to the basics to make it click. Unfortunately, they did so by literally copying off Season 1. I would go into that some other time.

Today, I will write about the mistakes of  Glee's Season 3. These mistakes are not just little faults that have no bearing in the story (ex. during the "Run the World (Girls)" number, Kurt and Santana kept changing positions; Santana's changing hairstyle in the "Stayin' Alive" performance in "Saturday Night Gleever"). These mistakes--okay let's call them mysteries to make it less painful--are fundamental faults that touch on the basic details/structure of the story, or the lousy attempt to keep one.

1. What is Mike's real full name?

Principal Figgins refers to Mike as Michael Chang Jr. twice--while talking to Mike and his dad in "Asian F" (S03E03) and during the graduation ceremony in "Goodbye" (S03E22). But in "Props" (S03E20), Tina called Mike "Michael Robert Chang" when they were text-fighting. What astounds me more is that both "Asian F" and "Props" were written by Ian Brennan. I can only imagine what would happen if Glee writers wrote How I Met Your Mother.

Even Mike is confused.

2. Where did Quinn go?

In "Saturday Night Glee-ver" Mr. Schue and Coach Sue organized a dance-off despite the fact that Quinn recently got into an accident which paralyzed her legs. In one scene she was right there between Tina and Santana...

There she is!

but in the succeeding scenes, where everyone is shown dancing, she was gone...

There she is not.

Yes, Quinn might've been uncomfortable with the dance-off and chose to leave but the writers should have had the decency to show her go out of the room or, maybe, explain her absence in the succeeding dialogues. But nothing was said. It was as if she wasn't there in the first place. Which leads me to the 2nd option... which is re-shoot the first scene without Quinn in it; then, there would be no obvious need for an explanation. Assumptions could be made. She may have been in therapy with Joe or purposely skipped glee club practice because of the dance-off. But with conflicting scenes showing that she was and wasn't present, it just doesn't make any sense.

3. Where did Mercedes go?

On senior's ditch day, she arrived at the park with the rest of the club sans Blaine (who was with his brother Cooper) and Quartie (who were at a skating park for the differently-abled). She even got off the bus in front of everyone else....

Mercedes leading the charge.

Then, during the all important rollercoaster ride where every gleek wanted to see who sat with whom... she's gone! Sam sat with Puck and Rory was left alone to sit with a stranger.

Mercedes left?

Amber Riley may have a phobia for rollercoaster rides but, again, the writers could have not made her go at all like they did with Blaine and Quartie. Yes, Mercedes not going may result to the need for further explanations but, for me at least, it's better than make her disappear and hope no one will notice.

Glee writers should give their viewers more credit than this. They can't keep making writing or editing slip-ups and hope that no one will notice. Because someone does. Or worse, we all do. Gleeks are a different, more passionate kind of fans. We watch and re-watch every episode; we memorize the songs by heart; we criticize the show for its faults; we praise it for the good things (Nene Leakes as Coach Roz!); we ship our own pairings religiously, to the point of seeing things we want to see (ex. Faberry); we write our own versions of the stories when things don't go the way we want it go (read: fanfiction)...and so on. The point is, Gleeks are addicted committed to the show intensely and the writers, I think, owe us--considering the bad storylines they constantly come up with--the decency to keep these little details right. This is one of the reasons that make How I Met Your Mother awesome. Sadly, it's one of the reasons why Glee fail.

Why do I even compare?

Kurt's 27 (Head) Dresses [Updated]

Because of the countless times I have watched and re-watched Glee's Season 3 for no logical reason at all, I was able to notice (one can't help it really) Kurt's many hats (or headdresses?). I never knew there can be that many kinds of hats.

I am not a fashion-forward person so I did my best to screencap all his hats (and headdresses) and let you, dear reader, educate me on the names of these fabulous, sometimes too creative, head wear.

Hat #1 - Kurt starts the season off with a witch's hat. Wicked.

(S03E01) "The Purple Piano Project"
Hat #2 - Then moves on to stretch his hat-wearing powers by wearing this outrageous but looks well-made... Shakespearean(?) hat.

(S03E02) "I Am Unicorn"

Hat #3 - A leather beret that Kurt wore twice.

(S03E03) "Asian F" and (S03E17) "Dance with Somebody"

Hat #4 - I have no idea what it is called but it looks so cute.

(S03E03) "Asian F"

Hat #5 - A weaved hat(?) Kurt (or Glee designers) must like this hat so much he wore it twice.

(S03E04) "Pot O' Gold" and (S03E20) "Props"

Hat #6 - A beret that is non-leather?

(S03E04) "Pot O' Gold"

Hat #7 - This is the Whatthefuckisthat?! Hat. Haha

(S03E06) "Mash Off"

Hat #8 - This is the most outrageous one I've seen on him so far.

(S03E06) "Mash Off"

Hat #9 - A jockey's hat, which he, fortunately, wore sparingly.

(S03E06) "Mash Off"

Hat #10 - He wore this sporty headband for the dodgeball game against the Trouble Tones and during gym class while eavesdropping on the boys.

(S03E06) "Mash Off" and (S03E09) "Extraordinary Merry Christmas"

Hat #11 - He highlighted his campaign by wearing a unicorn hat.

(S03E06) "Mash Off"

Hat #12 - A normal brown hat. Too bad this was the picture I could come up with.

(S03E07) "I Kissed A Girl"

Hat #13 - A beret again. He never gets tired of berets.

(S03E08) "Hold on to Sixteen"

Hat #14 - What would he wear on Christmas season... of course, a Christmas headband!

(S03E09) "Extraordinary Merry Christmas"

Hat #15 - A sailor's hat. Cute.

(S03E02) "I Am Unicorn" and (S03E10) "Yes/No"

Hat #16 - A winter hat of some sort.

(S03E10) "Yes/No"

Hat #17 - I don't know what it's called but it's the same as Santana's from Season 2.

(S03E11) "Michael"

Hat #18 - This shiny (leather?) cap that makes him look like a drag queen. Sorry Kurt.

(S03E15) "Big Brother"

Hat #19 - He wore this patriotic headband for glee club booty camp.

(S03E15) "Big Brother"

Hat #20 - He wore a patchy(?) beret in glee club while listening to Brittany and her prom theme.

(S03E19) "Prom-asaurus"

Hat #21 - A magician's hat!

(S03E19) "Prom-asaurus"

Hat #22 - Another hat I don't know what's called but it looks good on Kurt.

(S03E20) "Props"

Hat #23 - He and his fellow glee club members had to wear a welder's(?) mask for the sparkly number that Sue wanted them to perform for Nationals--although he likes to not use it as a mask even if he's using that welding machine.

(S03E20) "Props"

Hat #24 - Yes, he wears a normal cap, too. But it looks so un-Kurt, so to speak, that this normal cap looks so ghetto on him. And, the orange pants?!

(S03E21) "Nationals"

Hat #25 - Kurt capped off the season with a cap I am willing to wear anytime: a graduation cap.

(S03E22) "Goodbye"

I rarely post about hairstyles, clothes or hats but I liked doing this one only for the thrill of watching each episode and playing "Spot the Hat" with myself.

As I screencapped Kurt's hats I also noticed that the entire glee club is fond of hats, namely Quinn, Mike, Santana and Brittany (mostly, when they're not in Cheerios uniform), and even Mercedes. Maybe I'll post them soon... after midterm exams.

-----------------------------------------

[Updated]

Hat #26 - I almost missed Kurt's khaki boy scout-ish hat because it had a split second (well, 30 seconds max) of exposure. Kurt wore it while the seniors were waiting for Puck's Geography test results to come out.

(S03E22) "Goodbye"

Now I only need 1 more hat to make it 27.....did I miss anything?

-----------------------------------------

It turns out I did miss a 27th hat.

Hat #27 - Police cap. Kurt wore this for his role in the "Westwide Story" where he played a police officer.

Who Wore It Better?: Kurt vs Santana

Glee is my guilty pleasure. I admit that now. Like alcoholics or sex addicts (or shopaholics?), it was hard for me to admit this. I always pride myself for liking things that are: (a) really funny, (b) nerdy, (c) classy, (d) culture-y (forgive me for the term) or (e) not mainstream. All of which are not Glee.

Even if it has a storyline lacking continuity and depth, I continue to watch the show because: (a) the songs are good, (b) of Brittana and (c) some fanfictions I read slightly use canon stuff so I need to at least familiarize myself with the details. After watching and re-watching episodes from Season 3, whenever I want to waste away my time and not study, I noticed two things about Kurt Hummel that I haven't noticed before:

1. Kurt likes hats (or any kind of headwear[?]) the way Blaine is fond of bowties and loafers.

2. Kurt has worn a hat similar to what Santana wore in Season 2. Is this kind of hat a gay thing? Is there even such a thing?

I am currently writing about #1 and will post that soon. For now I will focus on #2, and ask the question, who wore this hat (or headwear? I don't even know what it's called. Can someone please educate me?) better...

KURT...

Kurt wore his on the episode "Michael" (S03E11) doing the Michael Jackson Wanna Be Startin' Something performance.

or

SANTANA?

Santana wore hers extensively on the episode "Original Song" (S02E16).

Verdict: Although I am not an expert on hats (or headwear?) and I liked the color of Kurt's hat (gray) better, I think it looks better on Santana. Maybe I should ask my friend malcolmfabness what she thinks.

Pacita-derecho
