Final(e) Thoughts: Everybody dies...eventually

A lot of the TV shows I'm following (or used to follow) will have big endings this season. Since I am big fan of TV shows, making lists and making my opinions known (all for posterity's sake), I will write about various TV shows' season finales, and what I think about them.

Today I will write about House's series finale titled "Everybody Dies".

Why This Ending is Big:

1. It is the series finale.

2. Its title is "Everybody Dies". Our curious selves want to know if everybody will, indeed, die.

House, close to giving up

3. Olivia Wilde and Kal Penn, my favorites in the show, will be back to guest-star. Lisa Edelstein won't.

She appreciates House for his willingness to kill her.

My Thoughts on "Everybody Dies":

1. House can't get enough of hallucinations. Hallucinations are (a) a good way to get into House's brilliant but twisted mind, (b) a good narrative tool, and (c) a perfect opportunity for House to interact with all characters from his past--whether living or dead.

1.1 Kurtner comes in to start the hallucination. His point was: House is thinking of killing himself despite the fact that death is not interesting because life does not interest him as well.

House's first hallucination: Kutner

1.2 Amber's point: Although finding meaning or thrill in solving puzzles (read: people's medical conditions) was shallow, it was enough reason for House to keep living.

House's second hallucination (and Wilson's nth wife): Amber

1.3 House's ex-girlfriend's (who I didn't know; maybe she was a Season 7 or 8 character) point: Cuddy and I are not the only ones who could love you. Props to House and this ex for mentioning the "C" word.

1.4 Cameron's point: Death can be a reward; a chance to just give up. House is too much of a coward to admit that he's taking the cowardly way out by arguing with himself long enough to take the decision to live out of his hands.

House's fourth hallucination (and possibly, the first person he loved--or close to loving): Cameron

2. House's funeral provided an opportunity for everyone to come back and say a few things about how this man, this jerk, has affected their lives. Some were thankful (Foreman, Thirteen, Taub, Dr. Asian Girl, Dr. Tough Girl, another doctor/intern I'm not familiar with), some were appreciative of how he was as a person (his mother, his foreigner wife, his ex-girlfriend, Cameron), one was nonchalant (Chase) and one was bitter (Wilson). I would have loved for Cuddy to have said a few things, a few words, about House at his funeral. Her being there was, like, putting an end to everything that needed ending; leaving no stone unturned. But her absence highlights two things: (a) Life is not always fair. Not everyone you know or whose life you touched/affected will show up at your funeral to say good (or bad) things about you; and (b) The departure of the show's characters--the ones we have grown to love or hate--have contributed to the show's decline.

2.1 When Cameron, Foreman and Chase left Princeton-Plainsboro because House was being too much of a jerk after three seasons, some stopped watching the show. Most stayed because Cuddy and House remained.

House's original team: Dr. Chase, Dr. Cameron and Dr. Foreman

2.2 When Kutner and Thirteen and left, I lost interest. I stopped watching the show. Others stayed because House, Cuddy, Foreman and Chase were there.

2.3 When I found out that Cuddy left, because Lisa Edelstein refused to do another season, all hopes and possibility of me re-acquiring my habit of watching House vanished. House without Cuddy is like, for me, Bones without Booth. It's pointless.

3. When watching a TV series, I try to figure out what the point of the whole story is. This is important so I know what to expect from the series, and to have something to go back to when the show's writing has gone array. How I Met Your Mother and Chuck have always been clear with what they want to achieve with their stories. Glee got lost in its multiple, confusing story lines. Bones skipped parts which I thought to be essential in their story. The Big Bang Theory is, sort of, at the crossroads.

With House, its goal was, for me, making him a better person. Or at least, a little less of jerk compared to what/how he was a few seasons back. With everyone who can steer House to the less-jerkier-path gone,  House writers turned to Wilson--the only constant thing in House's life. No matter how big and stubborn a jerk House got, he was, in the end, a good friend. He was willing to take his own life, figuratively, to help his best friend live his remaining five months the way his friend wanted. It was heartwarming. It was an act of selfless sacrifice worthy to be commended. Loyalty was House's best trait, after all.

HILSON: Bro-mance at its finest.

4. Everybody dies... eventually. If How I Met Your Mother teaches us that, it's not the end that matters but how we got there,  House teaches us that it's not the end that matters but why we got there. House became a loyal (almost selfless) friend to Wilson because of the fights they had, the battles they went through, the victories they achieved, the people they lost, the friends they gained, the secrets they shared, the sacrifices they made for each other and the experiences they had. Who knows what will happen to him after five months.

Note: Did anyone else, aside from me, noticed (and loved) how the edited screen shots turned out like paintings?

Final(e) Thoughts: Observations

A lot of the TV shows I'm following (or used to follow) will have big endings this season. Since I am big fan of TV shows, making lists and making my opinions known (all for posterity's sake), I will write about various TV shows' season finales, and what I think about them.

Today I will write about Community's season finale titled "Introduction to Finality".

WTF does this "vanity card" mean?

Why This Ending is Big:

1. I missed most of Season 3. The last episode I watched was "Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps". I blame my derailment on (a) Brittana and (b) the mid-season hiatus Community took. Watching the season finale and missing 14 middle episodes of a series is like watching the first few minutes of the movie and skipping to the last few minutes of it. Your goal is not to enjoy the movie but to know enough about it that you'll not be clueless when people talk about it.

2. I read that Chevy Chase is leaving the show because of disagreements with Community creator Dan Harmon. Pierce's not one of my favorite so I guess it's okay.

3. Since I skipped most of Season 3, it would be unfair to Community for me to judge its ending outrightly. This is big because how this finale turns out will determine if I will watch the 14 episodes I skipped.

My Thoughts Random* Stuff I Noticed on "Introduction to Finality":

1. Britta and Troy? What was that?

Britta and Troy hugging

2. Annie is worried about Abed because he hasn't played rendered imaginated dreamscapes in the dreamatorium since Troy moved out. Why did Troy have to move out if he's just studying airconditioning stuff?

3. They all re-took Biology all summer. I remember they took Biology 101 so they can share a subject together.

4. Subway ended its contract with the school cafeteria--I didn't even know it was there!?--and Shirley's Sandwiches will take over. Shirley has a sandwich shop now?! And she shares it with Pierce. Oh god I'm missing a lot.

Shirley's Sandwiches

5. Troy is the True Repair...man, who repairs man. Oh, I missed Community.

Troy and... uh, Jim Rash

6. Abed minus Troy is Abed multiplied. Abed's imagination spirals out of control as he deals with (or tries to) his best buddy's absence. The result, Lame Abed versus Evil Abed, who wants to re-create the Britta (read: Darkest) of Timelines where Jeff has one arm, he shot Pierce and Troy can't speak. Is this why the episode was named "Introduction to Finality? Will Jeff really shoot Pierce? God I hope so.

The mustache makes Abed evil.

7. Greendale has a court--as in courtroom?!

Greendale's Lady Justice

8. Vice Dean died... and inspired Troy to make the airconditioning school a regular one.

Vice Dean died...and did not went to heaven...yet.

9. This annoying guy, whatever his name is, is back. He is as annoying as he was in Harold and Kumar 2, and he owns the law firm Jeff used to work for.

He knows how money sounds like.

10. Annie and Abed? Maybe? Yes please.

Abed + Annie: ABENNIE?

11. Why is Pierce suddenly nice? Fact: In TV shows, bad/evil/mean characters turn nice when they're dying or will die. Just saying.

Pierce to the Annoying Guy in #9: "Hey don't use 'gay' as a derogatory term. Boo ya. Good person."

12. Is this the same guy who paintball-ed the shit out of Greendale last season? Looks like trouble.

Evil Paintball-Playing Guy

13. Chang is still in the airconditioning vents?

Scary Chang.

14. Starburns is alive? Why did he die again?

STAR-BURNS IS ALIVE!

15. Why is Jeff Google-ing "William Winger"? His dad, maybe?

Shameless plugging for searchies.com

16. Abed removes the dreamatorium so Britta and Troy can move in but he recreates a smaller version of it in his bedroom.

Abed  outgrowing the Dream-atorium...sort of.

For what its worth, "Introduction to Finality" was effective in doing what it needs to do: Convince me to watch the rest of Season 3. If you were observant enough to notice I only listed my observations, and some questions, about this episode. As I go through the episodes I missed, I hope all those observations will be substantiated by reasons and explanations as to why things turned out the way it did.

Note:
*"Random", in this case, means things that are new and I don't have an explanation for.

Final(e) Thoughts: Frootloops gets married!

A lot of the TV shows I'm following (or used to follow) will have big endings this season. Since I am big fan of TV shows, making lists and making my opinions known (all for posterity's sake), I will write about various TV shows' season finales, and what I think about them.

Today I will write about The Big Bang Theory's season finale titled "The Countdown Reflection".

Why This Ending is Big:

Howard gets married to Bernadette and goes to space.

Howard "Frootloops" Wolowitz and his Ma "my lovely bride to be" Bernadette

My Thoughts on "The Countdown Reflection":

1. I believe this is the first time The Big Bang Theory had a "previously on  The Big Bang Theory" spiel voiced-over by Raj and used a flashback. It reminded me of Chuck and How I Met Your Mother.

2. Amazing factoid of the day: Anyone can be ordained to do a wedding in the US! This explains why Barney married Marshall and Lily, Morgan married Chuck and Sarah and...

3. Reverends Leonard, Sheldon, Raj, Penny and Amy married Howard and Bernadette. Cool, cool, cool.

Bernadette on her minister-friends: They all got ordained. They're all marrying us. It's adorable.

4. The Big Bang Theory has successfully maintained its geekiness and comedy, which we all love, while balancing it out with just enough romance for character development.

4.1 Ever since Howard and Bernadette started dating, I was in a continuous state of disbelief. How could someone anyone stand the annoying man in turtleneck that is Howard Joel Wolowitz? Answer, he's going to be less annoying and more sweet.

Mr. and Mrs. Wolowitz

4.2 Unlike the new Mr. and Mrs. Wolowitz, I did not doubt that Leonard and Penny will end up together. Eventually. Season 5 managed to recombine these two without making everything seem forced or rehashed. Penny has become more understanding of Leonard and their friends; Leonard has become less of an awkward guy and more of a sweet boyfriend.

They are the Barney and Robin for geeks.

4.3 To say that Sheldon has changed is an understatement. The Sheldon of Season 5 is very different from the Sheldon of Season 1. He acknowledged, albeit not-so-explicitly, that it is normal to be (or want to be) with someone else other than yourself or your friends. I thought the arrival of Amy Farrah Fowler will screw up the dynamics of the group and lessen Sheldon's appeal. But it did the opposite. Amy caused Sheldon to open up in ways his friends and Penny could not.

Yes, your eyes are not tricking you. Sheldon is holding another person's hand.

4.4 The day Raj can talk to a woman sober and not under medication (or he tells everyone he's gay) is the day I know for sure that he has improved, has matured.

The yet-to-mature Raj

5. These are the funniest lines from "The Countdown Reflection":

5.1 Howard's mother: What kind of breakfast do you think they're gonna give you in Russia? (+10 pts for racism!)

5.2 Sheldon: That's what you said about the Green Lantern movie. You were 114 minutes of wrong.

5.3 Howard: Did you get down on one knee or were you already there? (Classic Wolowitz.)

5.4 Amy: Today's not about you two. Today's about Howard and Bernadette. And me. (Classic Amy.)

5.5 Raj: I keep telling you if I wasn't an astro-physicist I would've been a party planner.

5.6 Bernadette to her dad: "Here you go"? What am I a football?

5.7 Sheldon to Penny: Would you like some aloe vera? You just got burned. (Classic Sheldon.)

6. What now? Fine, Howard's on his way to space. When will he be back? What happens to him and Bernadette? Will Raj meet the girl OR boy of his dreams? What happens to Leonard and Penny? What will happen to Sheldon and Amy? Unlike the in past season finales of The Big Bang Theory, "The Countdown Reflection" is somewhat... lukewarm. Yes, the wedding was great and everyone was characteristically funny but "The Countdown Reflection" did not excite me. I am not excited about season 6. It is in this aspect that I believe "The Countdown Reflection" has failed.

The Wolowitz wedding, as photographed from space.

7. My thoughts on Season 6: Season 6 will be The Big Bang Theory's make or break season, storywise. It has to be. It is when Chuck Lorre will decide where to take the characters and the show. Will they be married? Separated? Alone? Five years ago, these men lived alone or with his mother or with each other, worked at a lab, ate take out food for dinner, always went to the comic bookstore, and had a crush on the girl next door. Now, three of them are in serious relationships (no matter how slow or fast they are going). It is slowly becoming less a show about socially awkward men leading awkward lives and more about how geeks are when they have girlfriends. The Big Bang Theory's writers have always surprised me with their wittiness and humor and, somehow, I rely on their ability to humor their audience (and still make sensible story arcs) to make Season 6 interesting enough. I trust and expect Lorre, with all his vanity cards, to make Season 6 better.

8. When Sheldon was talking to Howard and said "To kill a man", I misheard it to be "Tequila man". We only hear what we want to hear.

Final(e) Thoughts: GLEE-duation

A lot of the TV shows I'm following (or used to follow) will have big endings this season. Since I am big fan of TV shows, making lists and making my opinions known (all for posterity's sake), I will write about various TV shows' season finales, and what I think about them.

Today I will write about Glee's season finale aptly titled "Goodbye".

This week's assignment.

Why This Ending is Big:

1. Everyone's graduating--Rachel, Finn, Kurt, Quinn, Santana, Mercedes, Mike and, yes, Puck. Sadly, senior class president Brittany is not. More on her later.

Seniors minus Brittany.

2. Gloria Estefan guest stars as Maribel Lopez, Santana's mom.

My Thoughts on "Goodbye":

1. A lot has been said about Glee's faults--its issues with continuity, character development, sense and real-ness. But as I watched "Goodbye", I suddenly got misty and forgot about its faults. Lucky for me, I knew what hit me: Graduation Goggles.

First, let me tell you about Graduation Goggles. As our dear Aunt Robin explained in "The Exploding Meatball Sub", Graduation Goggles is "it's four year of bullies making fun of all the kids with braces even after the braces come off and they can walk just fine... but then on graduation day you suddenly get misty because you realize you're never going to see those jerks again."

This is why everyone on  Glee was suddenly nice. Even Sue. Expecting a kind Black Sue was quite of a long shot.

As I see the  Glee kids went up the stage (in no particular order hahaha!) I sort of forgot all the bad things they did and the crazy things they said, and the crazy terrible storylines the writers developed. I got misty, and felt I was going to miss seeing all the craziness that is  Glee. I guess, Graduation Goggles is a legit thing. These Graduation Goggles made me watch "Goodbye" in a different (read: more tolerant) light. I didn't care about the continuity issues and all its other faults. I just want to know what will happen to  Glee as most of its members graduate.

2. As the episode went on, it became clear to me who (among the seniors, at least) are the stars of the show. Star quality was highly evident on how much screen time each character's goodbye took. I measured their goodbyes and ranked them--most to least important.

Glee's Big Three: Rachel, Finn and Kurt

2.1 Kurt got his things sorted out with Blaine (sort of); gets a wonderful and heartwarming graduation gift from his dad (aka my hero) Congressman Burt Hummel, who danced "Single Ladies" with Tina and Brittany; got a solo to sing to the guys of New Directions; and found out he's not accepted at NYADA despite his amazing audition. A lot was going on for Kurt. Goodbye ranking: 3rd place.

Kurt and his boys

2.2 Finn said goodbye to his mentor Mr. Schue, who admits to blackmailing him to get him to join glee club; had an extensive talk with his mom about his dad; got sung to by the juniors of New Directions (more on this later); and made a mature decision (for once in his life) to break up with Rachel to "let the universe do its thing". Also, he enlists for the Army to change (or whatever) his father's dishonorable discharge. Goodbye ranking: 2nd place

Finn graduates.

2.3 Rachel was happy because she is prom queen, National show choir champion, going to NYADA, marrying the school quaterback/love of her life, and will be Quinn's college BFF. Then, she finds out Kurt didn't get in to NYADA and Finn didn't get in to that acting school. So, she made a mature decision to defer her admission for a year while she helps them out. Then, Finn dumps her on their wedding day so she can be in New York and follow her dreams. Goodbye ranking: 1st place.

Rachel dropped the dead weight that is Finn Hudson.

The way she went from being happy to slightly happy to extremely sad to afraid showed me one thing: she is the star of Glee. All other characters' goodbyes were closely linked (Finn's) or related (Kurt's and Quinn's) or remotely related but still related (Puck's) to hers. Seeing everyone say goodbye to her as she went on a train to New York solidified this conclusion.

2.4. Quinn said goodbye to her past and said hello to her future. She said goodbye to her Crazy Mother Bitch and Cripple-in-Denial personas, Puck, Sue and, even, Artie. It continues to baffle me why Cheerios uniform needed to be returned (or retired, as in Quinn's case) when they don't even have numbers on them and are specifically tailored to a girl's measurement. One of the mysteries of Glee, I guess. Quinn said hello to her future (hello, Yale!) by giving Rachel a subway (or was that a train?) pass. Seeing all her issues sorted out and all goodbyes said, I realized, this is not good. It may mean that she won't be around next season. Oops. Goodbye ranking: 4th place.

And, more importantly, Quinn sent all her "ships" sailing.

FABERRY

QUICK

QUARTIE

She even had moments with Joe, Mercedes, and the Unholy Trinity.

Quinn with Joe, Mercedes and Brittana

2.5 Santana told her mom she didn't want to go to college under the cheerleading scholarship; found out her girlfriend (aka Everything's That Is Good In This Miserable, Stinking World) was not graduating; and received tons of money (read: enough to buy a Lexus and more shoes) to help her achieve her dreams, whatever they maybe. I would have preferred seeing her angrier showing a more intense reaction to Brittany's non-graduating status or, at least, have a serious talk with Brittany about their college plans, but I guess that would take another 2 or 3 minutes, which the show chose to use on Finn or Rachel. Goodbye ranking: 5th place

Santana and her girls

2.6 As for the other seniors, Puck gets a kiss from Quinn, a Puckerman A+ (read: C-) and a high school diploma; Mike gets into some Chicago dance school on scholarship; and Mercedes got signed as a back-up singer and will take classes at UCLA.

Mercedes, Mike and Puck graduate.

3. Maribel Lopez rocks. She accepted Santana for being gay--when her abuela didn't; was happy when her daughter's girlfriend got into Purdue (even when it turned out to be not the University); and gave Santana the go signal not to go to college and enough money to go follow her dreams.

Maribel Lopez is, what we Pinoys call, a kunsintidora mom.

4. Glee made use of flashbacks. Finally Glee realized the wonders that are continuity, consistency and memories. Showing the flashbacks (the original glee club members dancing Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat number, Kurt performing Single Ladies and Mr. Schue hearing Finn singing in the shower) alongside modern day moments sparked some hope in me that maybe, just maybe,  Glee can start being better consistent with its stories.

The original five singing Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat

5. Murphy's Law trumps graduation goggles. If something is bound to go wrong, it will. Rachel and Finn broke up. Kurt didn't get into NYADA. Brittany did not graduate (for some reason I still couldn't believe). Santana has decided not to go to college. Life is unfair. Good thing Glee writers didn't succumb to the writer's version of graduation goggles (writing happy endings because it's graduation) and made believable endings, for a change.

6. Despite the graduation goggles, I still found parts of "Goodbye" problematic.

6.1 For the love of god (or whatever deity you praise), can someone tell me why Finn was singled out by the juniors of New Directions when they were supposed to say goodbye to all seniors?! Hearing Artie blurt out their half-baked reason, I felt blindsided, Survivor-style. Yeah sure Finn was nice to them but I felt that all seniors deserved to be sung goodbye to. Equally.

6.2 Why didn't Santana and Rachel went on the same train together? They were New York-bound anyway. Plus, it was hazy what Santana's dream was exactly (yeah she wanted to be famous, so?) and how she's going to get it (definitely not a sex tape). It is a far cry from the Magician's Code arc of How I Met Your Mother.

6.3 Why did Puck get at least two episodes to explain why he was graduating despite his failing grades and Brittany only got a minute or so to inform Santana (and us) why she was not graduating? WTF. The writers tried to be funny by blaming her 0.0 GPA or her skipped classes or her do-nothing presidency but it was, like Artie's reason, half-baked. If Brittany didn't attend classes, why was she in the classroom when Puck sang Hot for Teacher and Blaine sang You Should Be Dancing. See the photo below for proof.

Brittany in class ALL. THE. TIME.

6.4 Was Sam really a junior? I'm not keeping track of everyone's high school levels but I guess the writers did not remind its audience enough what year level everyone was in, leaving most of us confused. I guess the writers were too busy writing Quinn's ridiculous story arcs or was punishing Chord Overstreet for leaving Glee for 7 episodes.

7. Aunt Robin is right, we can't trust graduation goggles. They’re as misleading as Beer Goggles, Bridesmaid Goggles, and That’s-Just-a-Bulky-Outdated-Cellphone-in-his-Front-Pocket Goggles. These graduation goggles made me kind. Too kind.

I wonder what kind of goggles (I'm-Just-Following-My-Dreams Goggles, maybe?) Glee writers will use next season. The writers can either: (a) let go of these goggles, start writing and bring to Glee the glory that was Season 1 or (b) hold on to these goggles by introducing seemingly deep plots/twists but dismissing them in just a huff. Remember how they dealt with Quinn's and Santana's issues in Seasons 2 and 3? I wish Glee writers wouldn't start Season 4 with Rachel, Finn and Kurt (and the rest of the seniors) in New York suddenly, following their singing/acting dreams.

8. My thoughts on Season 4: With Sue taking a backseat from her main villain role because of motherhood, Coach Roz (NeNe Leakes) aka Black Sue will be next season's main villain. Revealing her black plans (In Tagalog, maitim na balak. I know, racist.) to bring down Principal Figgins is, I believe, a glimpse of what's to come. Sue went through the Bring Figgins Down Phase. I can forgive Glee for this storyline rehash because I can't get enough of NeNe Leakes.

Coach Roz to Coach Sue: That's quite an accomplishment for a pregnant woman who acted so old she went to high school with Moses.

Final(e) Thoughts: "Chuck Me."

A lot of the TV shows I'm following (or used to follow) will have big endings this season. Since I am big fan of TV shows, making lists and making my opinions known (all for posterity's sake), I will write about various TV shows' season finales, and what I think about them.

Today I will write about Chuck's series finale* aptly titled "Chuck vs the Goodbye".

As the cast of Chuck say hello to baby Clara, they say goodbye to us.

Why This Ending is Big:

1. It is the series finale. It is the ending to end all endings.

2. Sarah does not remember Chuck.

TV's most effective not-dating-in-real-life couple

My Thoughts on "Chuck vs the Goodbye":

1. Everybody got their own closures (or new beginnings). Textbook series finale but... I'd take anything I can get.

1.1 Morgan and Alex are moving in together.

Just. Adorable.

1.2 Casey is going after Verbanski.

1.3 Jeffster saves Gen. Beckman and gets a recording contract.

Jeffster's life-preserving performance

1.4 The Awesomes + baby Clara are moving to Chicago with Chuck's mom.

Baby Clara's kick-ass grandma is holding a gun to her aunt Sarah. What a family.

2. The use of parallelism between Season 1 and Season 5 was perfect. The story, literally and figuratively, went full circle.

Chuck meets Sarah.

Some of the most memorable dates in Chuck and Sarah's life

Who knows a porn virus can mean something this deep?

The moment Sarah asks Chuck to trust her. And he did.

3. I love the ending. It's perfect. Sweet and romantic yet not bordering on the cheesy. The kiss may or may not bring back Sarah's memories. Each viewer is given the chance to make an ending for himself/herself. To think of what they want to think what happened to Chuck and Sarah after that kiss. Imagination is a powerful tool. I'd like to think that Sarah will not get back all her memories with the kiss but she has recognized and accepted the truth that Chuck loves her, and they will get back to wherever they were before the faulty Intersect came into the picture...on their own time.

The kiss that topped all other TV lip-locks.

4. Something about the finale screams: Movie Sequel!

Note: *Chuck's finale aired months ago but the idea to write about series/season finales have occurred to me after "Chuck vs the Goodbye" aired. It would've been unfair to Chuck, my second most favorite TV series, if I wrote about other shows I have outgrown and didn't write about Chuck.
